This project comprises the gut renovation of an 1899 townhouse, located on one of Brooklyn's elegant streets of original townhouses. The exterior design seeks to preserve and build upon the character of the original facade while accommodating the addition of a new floor. The interior design seeks to harmonize with the exterior without attempting to recreate history, instead reinterpreting classical detailing in a contemporary language reflective of the date of renovation and contemporary lifestyle.

Sustainable measures include:
dense site zoning, walking distance to public transport, shopping, etc.
townhouse type shares structure and building envelope.
re-use of existing building.
re-use of salvaged brick.
relatively open southern facade, closed northern facade.
reflective-finish metal shingles at east and west facades.
high-performance spray-foam insulation.
high-performance mechanical systems allowing individual room zoning.
recirculating hot-water system.
efficient fluorescent and LED lighting throughout.
interior transom windows for daylight penetration.
rooftop photovoltaic solar array.
environmentally preferable interior finishes.
