manifesto for NEW YORK CITY:
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. I moved to New York City.
Because I believed New York to be the Belly of the Beast. Where better to make change?
And because New York City’s density and infrastructure make it one of the only places in America with the potential to be truly sustainable – to become a prototype for sustainability.
I love Oregon, and I miss it. Now I love New York, too. And I have come to know that the greed of the city’s ambition is matched by its altruism.
I am not a rocket scientist. It is clear to me that single-family homes and single-passenger automobiles will never be sustainable.
New York can lead the way for America. America can lead the way for the rest of the world. We have shown the world how to consume more, now we can show how to consume less. We have the means.
My son is two years old.
